Brief Introduction to the Working Principle of Thermoelectric Cooler

Also known as semiconductor thermoelectric cooling chip, cooling module or Peltier chip, thermoelectric coolers have played a vital role in daily‑life applications in recent years. Relying on its unique thermoelectric conversion capability, it has been widely used in many fields. Typical applications include phone coolers for gamers, beauty devices such as hair‑removal machines and cold‑compress instruments, handheld mini‑fans, etc. Some manufacturers have developed cooling vests with thermoelectric chips to cool outdoor workers, as well as portable insulin refrigeration boxes to store insulin and other medicines, bringing great convenience to users. Thermoelectric coolers also boast a wide range of industrial‑level applications.

Core Principle: Wonderful Application of Thermoelectric Effect

The operation of thermoelectric coolers is based on three key thermoelectric effects: the Seebeck Effect, Peltier Effect and Thomson Effect. These effects work together to realize the conversion between electric energy and thermal energy.

Seebeck Effect: When a loop is formed by two different conductors, thermoelectric potential will be generated in the circuit if temperatures differ at the two contact points. This effect is commonly applied in thermoelectric power‑generation scenarios. While it lays a theoretical foundation for thermoelectric conversion, it is not used for actual cooling in Peltier modules.

Peltier Effect: The core principle of semiconductor refrigeration! When electric current flows through a thermocouple composed of two different semiconductors (P‑type and N‑type), heat absorption and heat release will occur at two ends of the thermocouple. When current flows from the P‑type semiconductor to the N‑type one, the contact point absorbs heat (cold side). When current flows from the N‑type semiconductor to the P‑type one, the contact point releases heat (hot side). It is like sending an energy instruction to the thermocouple to achieve directional heat transfer.

Thomson Effect: When an electric‑current‑carrying conductor has an internal temperature gradient, it will absorb or release heat. In thermoelectric coolers, this effect assists the Peltier Effect, improves heat‑transfer efficiency, and stabilizes the temperature difference between the cold side and hot side.

With the synergy of these thermoelectric effects, Peltier modules require no refrigerant, and can achieve the function of cooling on one side and heat dissipation on the other simply powered by electricity.
